Note - this is not an unsourced site, if you want sources please click on the menu tab Home then select Sources, otherwise just ask. We do it this way because we choose not add 100s of links to commercial for profit sites which we consider spam at best. We also try to avoid listing sources that only lead people to a pay wall.

(A) Algonkian; (I) Iroquois; (S) Eastern Sioux;
Asterisk * after the family name denotes matrilineal descendancy from an Indigenous (Native American - American Indian) woman, which is the traditional way of doing things: "You are what your mother is". The child of an "Indian" woman, inherits their nation and clan or totem from their mothers, not their fathers. Between the 1838-39 Trail of Tears "Indian" removal, and 1967 it was illegal to say you were an "Indian / Native American" in Georgia (and other US states), if you insisted that you were, more often than not you were classed as "Free Person of Color", "Colored", "Mulatto", or "Black". Between the Removal and Emancipation you also risked being seized (kidnapped) and enslaved, or worse, murdered. UDHR and UN DRIP recognises our human rights to have a nationality and be who we really are. So where the matriline has been traced in individuals born before 1967, an asterisk * will appear after the name. Where known, the person's matrilineal nation by birthright appears as a middle name. While sons inherit both nation and clan or totem from their mothers, they cannot pass those on to their children, only daughters continue the traditional line of inheritance. -- added 9 Jan 2019 --- About the original Pamuna / Pomona Native American (Virginia Algonkin) community and Brooks family cemetery in now Griffin, Spalding GA, see Brooks Kilgore blog. 19 Feb 2018
